SHIFT

SHIFT is a structure composed of two horizontal planes pierced by an array of staggered vertical rods. The vertical rods enter from the top-down and bottom-up to create an implied central void. Texture is created by shifting the placement of the vertical elements up and down on the z-axis. The structure shifts its appearance as you view it from different views. The central void offers an invitation to look into the space but obstructs a full view through the structure, while actively alluding to the beyond through glimpses of light. The structure strives to foster a sense of mystery by withholding clear views through the form yet also references familiar patterns, such as a forest of trees, through the repeated vertical elements. As you move through the two levels and around the structure, you discover small areas where the rods emerge from the bottom-up or top-down only, referencing stalagmites and stalactites which grow on the surfaces of caves.
