Lichen Air Quality Index
Lichen is a composite organism; a type of vegetation formed by the symbiotic relationship between algae and fungi. Lichen have been shown to be reliable bio-indicators of air quality, as they derive the majority of their nutrients from the atmosphere. A large population of lichen is indicative of good air quality, while dense urban areas that generally have more pollutants and environmental toxins will see a reduction in the presence of the lichen organism.
