doppler
This sculptural table is designed for interior and exterior use. 64 layers of 1/4” wood veneers are laminated together topped with a thin layer of in-laid concrete. The table splits into five pieces: 1) an inner circular table with four of the doppler rings, 2) two small concentric arc shaped tables, 3) two symmetrical half circle pieces with a staggered edge that can be turned on their side to playfully rock back and forth. This set of tables is designed for casual conversation groups. It can provide for multiple uses within an environment, if the tables are turned upside down, or on their side, the wood layers of the doppler rings can be used to store items. The rough aggregate of the concrete resembles the sandy beach, while the ten Doppler rings mimic the pattern of the wood’s natural grain.
materials: laser cut sheets of luan, wood glue, concrete with rough aggregate.
The Doppler Effect is the change in the frequency of a wave for an observer moving relative to its source. The design of this table is a reminder of our subjective perception. Full understanding of the table is achieved when the pieces of the table are view apart and the inner layers of the table are revealed.
